  Commentary:  Astonishing, I understand, me being a movie buff and all, but not only do I not, at this moment (10/7/23 @ 1:48 p.m.), own a copy of this movie, I've never seen it! I first heard about this movie when I was 10 or 11. My neighbor and best friend, who was the same age as me, loved this movie, talked about it whenever she got the chance and urged me to see it if I ever got the chance. This was back in the early 1960's, on Guam, that had 1 channel television from 5:45 p.m. (5:30 p.m. on High Holy Days) until maybe midnight but usually not, if those with televisions were even watching. The thing was, because television wasn't much of a resource and movie theaters were very few and very far between, almost no one watched television or went to the movies on Guam until sometime in the very late 1960's, when more channels were obtained and more theaters had been built. We played, or read, or, you know, all the other things people do when they're not watching television or going to the movies, only we did those things all day and evening long, if we weren't in school or doing homework. Or doing chores, or delivering newspapers, or sleeping. Even when more TV and movie fare was available, I never got the hang of watching TV or "going to the movies" and, frankly, didn't have a TV or watch TV until around that expansion-of-TV time in the late 1960's, but, even then, it wasn't a habit that myself or any of my sisters developed until several (and I do mean several) years later. So, no Shane, not for me, until well, sometime Monday, 10/9/23, when the blu-ray of this movie will arrive on my doorstep. I've even decided not to read the two reviews I've attached to this write-up, or any others, or the Wikipedia description below, until after I've watched the movie.
    It's supposed to be the greatest and most lauded movie ever. And, I'm not really what you'd call a fan of Westerns. So, stay tuned. All things, including my proclivities, considered, I'm looking forward to this.

  Commentary:  Turns out this doesn't wear well the second time around, either. Even its comic book shtick has been well surpassed, and by its own series. I do like Michael Keaton best as Batman, though. He wore the mantle well, better than any others I can think of. His voice is the epitome of Batman. That said, I'm glad I own it and will probably watch it again. And the characters. Oh, the characters! Nicholson and Bassinger both made a huge splash as their characters, and their performances hold up well.
    I'm sorry, sometimes, that I don't have Batman Returns just to savor Danny DeVito's Joker. But, I've almost got too many Batman movies, as it is.

  Commentary:  This collection, dear Reader, is my prize. I stumbled across it while looking for a copy of one of my all time favorite movies, A Face in the Crowd. After Donald Trump was elected U.S. President, I couldn't get this movie out of my head. I was not alone in this. Four Films That Explain the Rise of Donald Trump, a thoughtful article written by Sean Mulvihill on the Roger Ebert website, meditates on this, as well. Interestingly, long before Donald Trump was elected U. S. President, I owned all of the four films Sean Mulvihill talks about. Our library, at the time I was ravenous to watch A Face in the Crowd, didn't have a copy (it does, now; I suspect there were several people requesting it after Trump's election). Every copy I found for sale was horribly expensive. Then, I noticed this collection that included this movie. It was priced out of my range but I kept my eye on it, day after day, month after month. Finally, it dropped by half, which brought the price down to just under $2.00 a movie. That I could afford. I scanned the collection of the other 14 movies. Some I'd seen, some I hadn't, two I already owned (which meant I could give copies of those movies to my actor niece, both of which are classics). I knew of all of them and was excited about seeing all of them. The list below is what was contained in the collection. There are still four (or, maybe five, I can't remember) that I haven't seen. Owning this collection is a delight. I'd never paid much attention to Elia Kazan as a director. Now, I'm much better educated!

    A Letter to Elia:  The collection includes an "intensely personal and deeply moving tribute" to Elia Kazan by Martin Scorsese and a coffee table type book about the films and Kazan's development. The tribute is pretty much a vanity project, but the book is interesting and the tribute is not a complete waste of time.

    On the Waterfront:  I am ashamed to admit that I have not watched this yet. I keep avoiding it, despite my curiosity. I'm not sure why but will report back when I've watched it.
      Yes, Roger Ebert christened this movies as one of his Great Movies.
      Yet another movie, by the way, that has actors who were later stars playing small, uncredited roles.

    Splendor in the Grass:  The first time I saw this movie I was unmoved. After I received this collection I watched it again and became surprisingly caught up in it. The final scenes are perfect.
      Both TCM and Emmanuel Levy have a flurry of pages about this movie. I've linked the title of the movie to the TCM posts. A list of Emmanuel Levy's posts about this movie is here. They all look interesting.
