  Commentary:  Under construction.
    Lots of local buzz about this movie, which took me by surprise. I live in a seemingly quiet mountain town that likes to imagine itself a "rural city" (a quote from local news sources who have used this phrase, forever and a day, as self-descriptive). It has pretensions to grandeur based on a flagrant, state-wide governmental history, and, as well, just beneath the thin and cracking surface, an energetic, willing cadre ready to spring into action to defend "good people everywhere, but, especially here" if it seems necessary. Thus, I think this movie might have local significance. I'll let you know, once I watch it.

  Commentary:  Under construction.
    I've known about this movie and have wanted to see it since relatively soon after it came out. It was not available to English-speaking audiences, though, until 1998, and then very hard to find and very expensive to procure. It's still a bit pricey, but much more easily available, and quite a bit cheaper than it was "back then".
    Roger Ebert christened it one of his Great Movies in 2000. In 2018 a fellow movie critic from Roger's site published a tribute to the film's creator, Isao Takahata upon his death that year.
    Isao Takahata was a stunning animator and story teller. You've probably seen several of his productions listed in the tribute linked above. I am really looking forward to absorbing this movie of his.

    I will, by the way, be adding an Actor/Role Table later. The movie has been released in at least three English dubbed/and-or subtitled versions and thus requires a bit of tweaking to my usual list, so, give me "a moment", please, to figure out the presentation and to determine which iteration I was able to procure. I won't definitely know which one I've got until I receive the movie, and it won't make it to me until August 5th.
    Update 072924:  The movie arrived today @ 1:45 p.m. via FedEx. Very securely packaged. I'm impressed, and I haven't yet played it. I'll be adding the Actor/Role table, in English, later today. Thank you, Amazon.co.jp!

  Commentary:  Under construction.
    My Florida Sister enthusiastically recommended this movie to me when it first came out, or thereabouts. She's not "into" movies the way I am, so when she recommends one to me, I sit up and take notice. At the time, though, my mother and I were negotiating what turned out to be her last year of life. Many situations were cropping up, including a diagnosis of lung cancer, setting up and carrying out a long term hospice situation for her here at home, and, you know, living day-to-day while squeezing as much joy and good feelings out of every single moment. I kept the movie on my mind's back burner, but, even after my mother died, I, well, kind of forgot about it, despite my sister's frequent insistence that I needed to watch it.
    Fast forward to a little over a week ago, when I was preparing a list for that famous, site wide sale that is held every year in July. Oddly, I was reminded of the movie because it came up in a list of movies I frequently access with the intent to purchase. But, I hadn't, yet. Well, this year, I added it to my I'm-going-to-get-this-and-watch-it list. And, now, it is on it's way to me and should be arriving next week. I'm very excited and will watch it the day it arrives. That is my promise to the movie, myself and My Florida Sister. And of course, I'll write about it as soon as I've digested it, which may involve a couple of back-to-back watchings.
    And then, I'll call My Florida Sister.

    This movie was recommended to me by a friend of one of my brothers-in-law when I was involved in a conversation about war with a group of visitors (of which I was one) to their home. Because of something I said, which I can't, now, remember, he urged me to watch this film. I've seen it more than a few times since then. It always churns my gut in just the proper way.

  Commentary:  Hmmm. What to say about this movie? Well, firstly, it was almost universally panned by The Critic Class. You know who I mean. The critics who get published in newspapers and magazines. Roger Ebert didn't even touch it. Surprisingly, there were two major critics who gave it high ratings: The critic for the LA Times (review attached to the title of this post) and the critic for the San Francisco Chronicle (here's the link for the sfgate review). Otherwise, the pros just generally stomped all over this production. However, secondly, among plebian movie watchers (myself included), it was almost univerally enjoyed and well rated. My experience is that I saw the movie on some streaming service not long after it was released for theatrical viewing and then pulled from theaters. I don't remember what service, nor do I remember what provoked me to watch it, but it stuck with me, so much that, when I was reminded of the movie earlier today (in an article delineating "movie stinkers") I decided, let me check the price on this, oh, it's reasonable, more than reasonable, in fact, it's a bargain, and I ordered it.
    The LA Times review, by the way, includes cast reactions to the audience and critical reactions, as well.
    I didn't know, until today, searching out the movie, that it was universally panned by critics and universally enjoyed by plebes, including me. Realizing this is a large part of why I decided to acquire it. I am not above enjoying movies that (many professional) others find downright detestable (and, believe me, many professional critics placed this film into that category).
    So saying, since it isn't a popular movie, it'll take a few days to make it to my doorstep (or mailbox, whatever). I'll report back. I'm so very curious to see how this movie hits me, now, and, by the way, pleased to add it to my collection, in large part because of the contention surrounding it.

  Commentary:  Under construction.
    Although Roger Ebert rated this movie a "mere" 3.5 stars, (his review is linked to the title of this post, above), being the Scorsese fan that he is, he was fascinated enough with this film to interview Scorsese about the making of this movie. It's an interesting, occasionally provocative interview in which Scorsese admits how he played with history in order to increase the tension in the movie. If you find this film at all worthy of attention, you should check out that interview.
    By the way, you'll notice that the Actor/Role table (below) for this movie is stacked. This movie is full of historical personages that I wanted to list, I wanted to make sure the one named child actor was represented, as were as many of the female actors as possible and as many racially diverse actors as possible were included in the table.

  Commentary:  Roger Ebert christened this movie as one of his Great Movies in 2010. My guess is that he reviewed it initially in 1985 (although, maybe he didn't, maybe it didn't become available to U.S.A. audiences until 2010), but I can't seem to find any other review on his site but this one.

  Commentary:
    I don't remember when this movie was released to video for home viewing, so I don't remember if Mom and I saw it in the theatre or at home on video or on some random television channel. I remember, though, how we were introduced to it and why we sought it out. One of the people who delivered Mom's oxygen tanks in Mesa, AZ, an older man (although not nearly as old as Mom), would chat with us when he made his deliveries. Mom always looked forward to his visits because he was really into the military and both of them enjoyed talking military shop. Of course, Mom's military was the military of WWII. The O₂ deliverer's military was Vietnam/East Asia. Anyway, during one of these chats he told Mom and me about this movie and strongly recommended that we watch it, if we had the chance. We did. Much to my surprise, not only did I like it, but Mom did, too. I remember one of her comments, "That seems pretty realistic. I'm surprised. No heroes. No villians. Just war and blood."

  Commentary:  I don't actually have this movie in my collection, yet; it's on the way. But, I watched it last night, uncut, without commercials, at this link, The Day After, courtesy of Super Critical Podcast. Thank you, Super Critical Podcast! In case, Dear Reader, you're interested in knowing the ruminations of Super Critical Podcast about this movie, the link for that episode is here. I recommend you check it out. In fact, I've fallen in love with this channel and recommend it to you if you have any interest in movies featuring nuclearity.
    So, yes, I've watched it. It is the most devastating nuclear apocalypse movie I've seen, thus far. It is not for the faint of heart, but, despite its high level of tragic believability, it's worth it. There was a small but not annoying issue of video fuzziness at the beginning of the movie but I think that may have been due to either my TV or connection, because it corrected itself almost immediately. It is loaded with well-defined characters and scenarios that won't let go of your mind, even after the final credits.
    It was a TV production broadcast during the hey-years of nuclear apocalyptic films, the early 1980s. Of all the nuclear apocalyptic movies I've seen, so far, I have to say that this is the most riveting because it is the most well done and leaves nothing to the imagination. It's been less than 12 hours since I finished the movie and I continue to have images from it pop up, unbidden, in my memory. As you watch, you'll recognize several actors who hadn't yet become readily recognizable when this film was released who later went on to become big-deal-actors. You'll also notice the obvious seriousness with which this production was approached. This was one of the best blendings of message and movie I can recall, without a hint of preachiness in the script. Just daily life lived under a literal nuclear cloud.
    I'll be watching it again, later after I receive it, so I may have more to say about it. Or, you know, not. It was devastatingly realistic and I have a feeling that sense of devastation doesn't let up after multiple viewings. This movie, by the way, is the film that had a huge impact on U. S. President Ronald Reagan and was responsible for causing him to rethink his nuclear war policy.
  Update 1/25/22:  Extra Credit Question: Who do you know (including yourself) who you think would be capable of ordering the launch of a nuclear bomb? Don't worry, Dear Reader, I'll explain and elaborate later.
