    In case you're wondering, yes, I've seen every single one of the following movies. It's funny, I never think of myself as a Star Trek fan, but I really enjoy these older movies. I've watched some of the newer series episodes, but never a whole newer series. I think I've seen one of the movies based on the newer series, but that's it. It's not that I didn't enjoy it. After some thought it has occurred to me that the earlier series are likely more "baby-boomerish" in tone than the later ones. I have no cogent reasons for thinking this, and, perhaps, I will think about this, but it's not something on which I'm focused. Probably the spin-off of which I've seen the most episodes in Star Trek: Voyager, which I enjoyed as much as the first three series. Seven-of-Nine, a startling character. Hmmm ... maybe, someday, I'll collect that series, as well.
    And, of course, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is a part of my collection. I've had it for some years and continue to watch and enjoy episodes of it to this day.

      And, yes, with the procurement of this set I now have two copies of this movie, a standalone and this one. Which is fine. It's my favorite of all the Star Trek Movies, so it's nice to have an extra copy, you know, just in case.

    You'll notice that I only appended the reviews of these movies to two critics, despite the fact that many have (and continue to) critique these first ten Star Trek movies. I mean, the choice of reviewer opinions is endless. In one article, though, posted at Roger Ebert's review website, Ebert gives space to a reader who has several bones to pick with Ebert's reviews of this franchise. It makes for interesting reading. You might want to check it out.

  Commentary:  Again, I'm not a fan of animation, but this pulled me in when the shot of the zebras on the plain, at the beginning of the movie, dissolved into the shot of ants carrying leaves along a tree branch; or vice versa, I'm not sure which way the shot dissolved. At any rate, I find it very entertaining. So does my Mom. It has, though, been awhile since we've seen this one.
    Here's a link to a site called "The Lion King World Wide Web Archive - The Unofficial Fan Resource". It's grown quite a bit since I last visited it (I'm writing this on 7/31/21). It's very well done, very up-to-date and loaded with all kinds of stuff related to The Lion King franchise and fandom.

  Commentary:  This is one of those movies that's guaranteed to please, in one way or another, both of us. Since we watch parts of it every time it appears on television, when I noticed a cheap, widescreen copy of it for sale I snatched it. We watched it that night. Much better to have constant favorites on DVD, since it's easy enough to pause them or watch only the parts we happen to be thinking about at any time.
    The truth is, I'm not a fan of the after-death philosophy behind the movie, although it's pretty enough and certainly makes for a unique thriller. The famous love scene is nice but give me Diane Lane's first fuck with her extra-marital lover in Unfaithful over wet pottery clay and "Unchained Melody" any day. I especially love, though, Whoopi Goldberg's performance as Oda Mae (this character deserves mention in some tome of memorable, perfectly played movie characters) and Tony Goldwyn's performance as Carl Bruner. I read someplace that Tony Goldwyn's preference is not for acting, which is too bad. I've seen him in lots of bit parts and his performances are always memorable and enlightening.
    Just for fun, I thought I'd include Roger Ebert's critical review of this movie. In a way, it's a send-up of all ghost movies.

  Commentary:  I'm surprised I've made no mention of this movie in any of my journals. This is one of those movies that we watch every time we can catch it on a television channel, which is why I snatched it up when I ran across a copy of it. We both hone into this movie as though we're having a dream. I'm glad we finally got a copy of it because when it was on TV I used to have a hell of a time getting Mom to go to the bathroom during a playing of it. Now, I can stop the movie when I notice she looks like she'd better hit the toilet. [Her joke is that you can tell when someone needs to go to the bathroom when you can see waves crashing in their eyes...which is almost the truth with my mother.]
    Roger Ebert was so impressed with this movie that he not only gave it an initial four star review the year of its release (that review is linked to the title of this post), he followed that up with an interview with Whoopi Goldberg and later christened it as one of his Great Movies.

• Commentary:  Here's another one I'm stunned I've never mentioned in this journal. We've been regular renters of this movie since one of my nieces introduced us to it when it first came out on video. Now we own it. We don't quote dialog from it, yet, but, there is that danger.
  Update 5/9/2022:  This movie can be a little sweet, at times, but it's also moving and genuinely dedicated to portraying female-female relationships as touchstones in the lives of women. It does this well. It is never saccharine, never unrealistic, although it definitely shoots its realism through a gauzed lens.
