Carrie
- Commentary: Under construction.
Can you believe I have never seen this movie all the way through, of a piece? I've watched scenes from it here and there, usually in a program about movies and/or horror movies, but I've never seen "the whole thing". I can't even remember why I thought of it this morning when I was doing some clean-up of many of my recent entries in this journal.
You don't have to look far, as it turns out, to find a very cheap, unused copy of it. It doesn't seem to be very popular, at the moment. So, I purchased it to add to my "horror" collection, on which I've been concentrating, lately. And, of course, now that I've been reminded of it, I'm very curious about it.
So far, all I've learned about it is that it isn't considered "folk-horror". In addition, I've learned more than a little about what distinguishes "folk-horror" (which I've added as a subject label over there to the left) from just plain "horror". It seems, unless I'm misunderstanding everything I've read this morning, the main differences between the two categories is that folk-horror seems to require a rural setting and attributes "evil" to the setting, rather than to people. "Carrie", of course, does not take place in a rural setting and, if I'm recalling correctly, the "evil" resides within a person, although from what little I know about the movie, it seems to me that an argument can be made for Piper Laurie, who plays Carrie's mother, being the source of the "evil" and Carrie merely being in possession of a neutral talent and a victim of domestic abuse.
I'll clean up this post, add links and think and write more (about lots of things regarding horror/folk-horror) when I've watched the film, of course, and satisfied myself, as well, that nobody considers this movie an example of folk-horror.

Spike Lee 7 Joints
- Commentary: Still workin' on it, honey. Got a ways to go.
Funny, though, I'm having a hard time finding an interesting, informative review of this specific collection. Not sure why, and it's possible I'll be completely unsuccessful, but, in the meantime, I think it's important to include the fact that no one seems to want to take on a critique of this collection.
In the meantime, you might want to read a short, pithy interview Roger Ebert conducted with Spike Lee as Lee was preparing to shoot Malcolm X in 1991. I attached the interview to the title of this post.
This is, of course, not the only collection of Spike Lee films in existence, nor will it be the last. In the meantime, for what it's worth, here is the official Wikipedia perspective on Spike Lee, his life and career.

Roger Ebert included this movie in his "Great Movies" collection, the review for which is connected to the title of this movie.
This movie is loaded with cameos. Although I listed 20 actors, above, the actual list could go on forever. You'll notice this, if you watch the movie, as every other scene involves an actor of which you think, "I know that one. Who is that?" A more complete list (although I can't swear that it contains all the cameos) can be found in the Wikipedia write up for this film, linked below.

Folk-horror and Me
Aside from my attraction to the horror genre, it seems I especially enjoy Folk Horror, as, after ordering The Wicker Man, I looked up various lists of what movies have been included in this genre and, it seems, I own at least six and, possibly, more, depending on the list to which I'm paying attention.
Thus, I've inaugurated a new category, "folk-horror" under which to single out these gems in my collection. The category is a list of those films in my collection I've so far identified as "folk-horror". I've labeled them as "folk-horror" as asubject label category, to the left and down. Just click on the category and all the "folk-horror" movies I own (that I've correctly identified, so far) will appear.
Additionally, I still haven't decided which movies are "folk-horror" versus, simply "horror", so there may be some changes coming to this list, as I study this category, starting with this Wikipedia article and continuing from there.

The Wicker Man - The Final Cut
- Commentary: Under construction.
This version purports, on its cover, to be the "Final Cut". Whether that's true or not (I suspect it is not) remains to be seen, since I'm sure this will not be the last cut. There is something about this film that continues to attract attention. It has had relatively robust distribution for 51 years, as of this year. It has been cut and recut six ways to Sunday. It continues to attract much interest, and I don't notice that interest slumping. When I receive this disc and view the movie, it will be my first time watching it all the way through. I'm so curious about it.
This version of this film boasts a 94 minute run time. The cut that was initially released to theaters was 88 minutes. As well, there continues to be argument about which cut contains all that exists of this movie, as well as all that was intended to exist of this movie.
Ver-r-r-y interesting!
