The Big Sleep - WB 20 Film Collection Thrillers
- Commentary: Another sacrilegious write-up. I found it interesting to follow, but so little of it stayed with me that I had to look up the story line to see if I'd even watched it. I couldn't remember a thing. I'm not a good audience for old thrillers, I guess.
Having said that, it does have some significant actors in it, like, for instance Dorothy Malone, so I decided it needed more than an abbreviated Actor/Role table.
In addition, this is one of the few Humphrey Bogart movies that Mom slavered over when we'd watch it on TV. Frankly, I think Lauren Bacall did it for her. I remember her once saying, "What in the world did she (Lauren Bacall) see in the likes of him (Humphrey Bogart)?!? Ah, the innocence of the audience!

Deception
- Commentary: What can I say? This is a Bette Davis movie, so it's a favorite of mine. It's a heart wrenching story of two musicians played by Paul Henreid and Claude Rains vying for the love of another musician (Davis), one of them doing it very badly with a sharp edge of jealousy, one of them doing it out of confusion and anger. The end leaves you wondering if either suitor deserved her, or if she deserved either of them. Great story. Very involving.

A Stolen Life
- Commentary: If I were asked to pick only one Bette Davis movie to keep in my collection, it would be either this movie or Now, Voyager and I am, frankly, grateful that I will never have to make the choice. In this movie Davis plays identical twins, one of whom is sweet, smart and unassuming, one of whom is devilish, smart, and bent on assuming the other twin's life. The second twin dies. The first twin, in order to be reunited with the love of her life, who was stolen from her by the dead twin, masquerades as the second twin, with almost disastrous consequences. She did not realize that the marriage of her dead sister was on the rocks and her insertion of herself into the situation promises to end badly. It doesn't, of course, and the circuitous managing of the relationship threatens to undo her. Ah, but there is light at the end of the tunnel.
We're due, shortly, for a few days of snow. I will likely devote one of those days to a Bette Davis marathon, which will definitely include this movie. Long live the availability of Bette Davis movies!

Ace in the Hole
- Commentary: I didn't know anything about this film when I first checked it out for viewing. I was on a binge, at the time, of watching movies that were made the year I was born and this was one of them. I barely remember any of the other movies I found (not a lot; our county library system is a bit short of 1951 films, even though there were plenty made, according to this list, 1,744, to be exact). This was not the only 1951 movie Kirk Douglas made, and it's not the only 1951 movie I own, but it's a doozy.
If you think the late 1960's through the early-to-mid 1970's had the bead on socially relevant movies, watch this one. The behavior depicted (brilliantly, in my estimation) in this film is so ubiquitous, now-a-days, not only by individual journalists (of which there are many Chuck Tatums) but by entire media corporations, that many don't even realize there is a problem ... until, that is, they watch this 68 year old movie. If you entertain, even a little bit, a healthy skepticism of today's media, you should treat yourself to this movie.

The Elia Kazan Collection
- Commentary: This collection, dear Reader, is my prize. I stumbled across it while looking for a copy of one of my all time favorite movies, A Face in the Crowd. After Donald Trump was elected U.S. President, I couldn't get this movie out of my head. I was not alone in this. Four Films That Explain the Rise of Donald Trump, a thoughtful article written by Sean Mulvihill on the Roger Ebert website, meditates on this, as well. Interestingly, long before Donald Trump was elected U. S. President, I owned all of the four films Sean Mulvihill talks about. Our library, at the time I was ravenous to watch A Face in the Crowd, didn't have a copy (it does, now; I suspect there were several people requesting it after Trump's election). Every copy I found for sale was horribly expensive. Then, I noticed this collection that included this movie. It was priced out of my range but I kept my eye on it, day after day, month after month. Finally, it dropped by half, which brought the price down to just under $2.00 a movie. That I could afford. I scanned the collection of the other 14 movies. Some I'd seen, some I hadn't, two I already owned (which meant I could give copies of those movies to my actor niece, both of which are classics). I knew of all of them and was excited about seeing all of them. The list below is what was contained in the collection. There are still four (or, maybe five, I can't remember) that I haven't seen. Owning this collection is a delight. I'd never paid much attention to Elia Kazan as a director. Now, I'm much better educated!
- A Letter to Elia: The collection includes an "intensely personal and deeply moving tribute" to Elia Kazan by Martin Scorsese and a coffee table type book about the films and Kazan's development. The tribute is pretty much a vanity project, but the book is interesting and the tribute is not a complete waste of time.
