Once Were Warriors
- Commentary: Under construction.
I saw this movie some years ago. I remember the experience of viewing it, but have less of a memory of the story. I remember being stunned by it. Now that I've been reminded of it, I want to see it again. And, again. That's why, when I happened across it this evening, I decided it should be in my collection.

Joseph Fiennes playing a Roman soldier looking for the body of Jesus? And Peter Firth playing Pontius Pilate? Sounds like entertainment to me! But, then, I'm a religious movie junkie. You may feel differently.

Mary Magdalene
- Commentary: Under construction.
Oh, come on. Don't act surprised. You're aware of my fascination with religious movies, particularly those about the religious triune of Elohim-Allah-Jesus, religion(s) which which I am most familiar. Besides which, these are among the greatest characters in all of storytelling history. Of course I am ever fascinated by their stories.
I didn't even know this movie existed until a few minutes ago, and on this upcoming Sunday it will be a part of my collection. Rooney Mara as Mary Magdalene? Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus? Chiwetel Ejiofor as Peter? Tahar Rahim and Judas? I'll be right there! Save me a seat.

I have to say, I'm really looking forward to watching this film. It falls just about smack dab in the middle of Barbara Stanwyck's astonishing and prolific acting career. I can't wait to add it to my collection, either. Although it was released in 1950, the way it's described (see review attached to the title of this post), it sounds like one of the first, and definitive, revisionist Westerns.
This package includes the novel by Niven Busch, by the way.

This movie is the main reason I added this movie to my collection (although I'm curious about Bergman's early Swedish films, as well). I'm excited about watching this version back-to-back with Joan Crawford's version of this story and seeing how they compare and contrast with one another.

As well, if you care to watch this film, here is the entire film presented by The Internet Archive "for your viewing pleasure" [What video introduction does that phrase come from? Anybody? I know I heard it hundreds of times, in a commercial message immediately preceding a program, maybe? Or, was it uttered by a 60's Master of Ceremonies presenter on one of those interminable Ed-Sullivan-type shows? I just don't remember its context.]

Wikipedia doesn't have a write-up of this film series. I've included the Wikipedia links for the individual movies in their write-ups, above. As well, here is the Criterion presentation of this film set which includes mini-descriptions of each film. For a longer description of the individual films in this set, try this article by ioncinema, in which Nicolas Bell presents longer, more ruminative reviews of each film. - The Count of the Old Town

A Woman's Face - 1941
- Commentary: This movie is a United States remake of the Swedish film starring Ingrid Bergman, also titled, in the English translation of the original Swedish name, "A Woman's Face". I've ordered both. I'm so curious to see which I like better and how the story was handled by two different directors and actors. I'll be adding that version, above, when I receive it.
