The Wave
- Commentary: Under construction.
I didn't know about this film until just now, today. It's a bit pricey but so intriguing that I don't think I'm taking a chance. I think I will be astonished by it and pleased that I've added it to my collection. And, by the way, this movie has received every kind of review from highest to lowest (one prominent reviewer gave it one-and-a-half stars, which leads one to wonder, what quality in the movie led to elevating it above one star status? One other observation, professional critics are, in chief, those who are hard on the movie. "Casual" viewers are much more likely to rate this movie highly. Kind of makes you wonder ...

Picnic at Hanging Rock

Although in the movie review linked to the title of this post Roger Ebert gave this movie three and a half stars, eventually, in 1998, he christened it as one of his four star Great Movies and reviewed it, again, as such.
In 2022, when director Peter Weir received a lifetime achievement Oscar, the site also published retrospective article about the director, which makes for interesting reading if you're a fan of his work. I am one of his fans, so I found it interesting. Turns out, I am so much of a fan that I own most of his movies.

Watership Down

Professional critics left a trail of highly ambivalent reviews of this movie. This is one of the reasons I decided to add it to my collection. The other reason is the star-spangled cast, some of whom are mentioned below. Wow! Was this movie chased after by the acting community and the heavy-hitters tended to win out! They clearly had high hopes for it. Which, I think, in the end, is what made this movie so popular.

At the heart of this movie is a wry, difficult, ultimately disturbing commentary on identity, mostly personal but, in part, global, as well.

This movie was recommended to me by a friend of one of my brothers-in-law when I was involved in a conversation about war with a group of visitors (of which I was one) to their home. Because of something I said, which I can't, now, remember, he urged me to watch this film. I've seen it more than a few times since then. It always churns my gut in just the proper way.

The Parallax View

I've seen this movie before, several years ago, I mean several. I remember being intrigued and confused by it at the same time. Maybe, now that I have the entire paranoia trilogy (all of which I've previously seen), watching the three, back to back, in the order in which they were released, all three movies will make some different, more enlightened sense to me.

My father and I actually read the book together from which this movie was created, out loud, and discussed it at length. This is an activity my mother and I usually did, so it was a special treat for me (and my father, as well, I have good reason to assume). I still remember bits of our discussions. We never went to see the movie, together, but my father never much appreciated movies, well, except for a few. A very few.
