  Commentary:  I own this, in large part, because it is a Peter Weir film and I strive to own most of his films. It is a crazily involving film, for me. Trek films are one of my weaknesses. This one suits me and, besides, contains many of the hallmarks that make Peter Weir films great in my eyes: startling landscapes, curious and difficult relationships, complicated conflicts, minutely specific characterizations, a sense of time standing still.
    I notice, in the Wikipedia write-up, some critics considered this film not up to his usual quality, not one of his best, as Roger Ebert points out in his review, linked to the title of this post. I quibble with him and others who have "Peter-Weir-expectation" problems with it. This is a Peter Weir film. That's why I own it. Peter Weir, through his films, owns me, this film, included. It is, as well, a "spectacle" film, if for no other reason than the landscape, which is so involving that, well, it demands to be in a Peter Weir film.

  Commentary:  Although I just received this movie today (1/18/2022) and haven't yet watched it, I already have something interesting to relate about it. You'll note that the link to the movie in the title of this post takes you to a review by Roger Ebert in which he consecrates the movie as one of his "Great Movies". That was in 2002 when he reconsidered his initial review of the same movie which he wrote in 1973.
    Roger Ebert was not the only film critic who reconsidered their initial opinions of this film. Wikipedia devotes an entire section of their write-up on this film to its Re-evaluation in years subsequent to its initial release by not only film critics but other professionals in the industry. In addition, if you pull a search for this movie on Roger Ebert's site, all the reviews but one on at least the first page mention this movie, whether or not they were written by Roger Ebert. This continues through the second page of search results, as well. I didn't go any further, I didn't need to. It seems this movie, slowly but surely, gained an authoritative reputation through the years within the industry. This almost makes me salivate at the prospect of watching it, for my first time, tonight.
    Another mention: In 2018 at Roger Ebert's site Matt Zoller Seitz wrote a ranging and provocative memorium article about Nicolas Roeg on the occasion of his death. It's both informative and enjoyable reading.
    Finally, Wikipedia's article on Nicolas Roeg is a delightful addition to all the information above. Aside from listing all his films done as a director and cinematographer (take a look, I'm sure you've seen and enjoyed a few; chances are, more than a few) the article is littered with acknowledgements from others in all corners of the film industry citing Roeg's influence on their work. I, myself, own two of his films (this one and Samson and Delilah), have seen several [one of which, Far From the Madding Crowd, ranks as one of my all time favorites; I know, I know, why don't I own it then? Why don't I own it?!?], would like to see several more and hanker to own some of those.
    At any rate, I'll definitely be back here within the next few days to write about my reaction to the film. Stay tuned, Dear Readers.

  Commentary:  Within the last few weeks when I was doing basic research for this site this movie captured my attention. I'm not sure, but I think I may have encountered it during a discussion of the EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) phenomenon resulting from a nuclear blast on an episode of Super Critical Podcast [the hosts of the episode to which I listened, by the way, are wary of what has been attributed to this phenonmenon]. At any rate, whatever was said piqued my interest and I ordered the movie.
    I haven't watched it, yet, and will report back once I do. In the meantime, I discovered that it is listed on TimeOut - Movies's latest (December 10, 2021) compilation of The 100 best horror movies of all time. Since the last time the Wikipedia article on the film (linked immediately below) referenced the list in 2014 this movie has moved up one notch from 66 to 65.
    I couldn't help it, by the way. I perused the entire list to see which movies in my collection appear on the list. Here's a rundown. The names of the movies I own are linked to the articles TimeOut - Movies wrote about each movie, including their current ranking (the list is reranked periodically - by the way, TimeOut's The 100 best horror movies of all time list includes two write-ups, the initial for the film as it appears in the list and an additional, different write-up when you click on the title; unfortunately, the html is so convoluted for the list that I couldn't figure out how to link to the initial write-up, so, if you want to access the first write-up, you'll need to scroll through the list; it's usually worth it, until the list is recalibrated, I suppose), after which I linked each to its location on my site:

    So. I was surprised to notice in TimeOut's The 100 best horror movies of all time list how many I'd seen and not collected, on purpose. I don't find horror films unwatchable. It's just that it has to be really good for me to want to watch it more than once. Of course, all of TimeOut's The 100 best horror movies of all time are supposed to be that good. I think that depends on the customer, and I'm a tough customer for horror. But, I scribbled down one movie from the list of which I'd never heard but read so interesting that I think I'd like to find it in my library system, rent it, if they have it, and possibly own it: 13. Don't Look Now. It's by one of my favored directors and comes in a Criterion edition, but it's a bit pricey for me, right now, especially since I need to settle down on movie buying for awhile. Ah, well. Could the U.S. government please send its citizens another stimulus check, say, a $2,000 check? The oligarchic corporations, into whose pockets it would land lickety split via citizens spending this money immediately (including me), would be thrilled. So would I. Oh, U. S. Government in the guise of Joe Biden, how reckless you are with your citizens, and, ultimately, your country.
    You may notice that, in my own labeling, I did not assign the "horror" genre to all these films. I thought about it, as I was compiling this post, but decided to keep my original ranking. Horror is different for different people. Those that I didn't label as horror don't have quite the horrific impact for which I look in a horror film.

  Commentary:  I haven't watched this movie, yet, but I will be watching it tonight and will report back later. I am a fan of South Korean cinema, in general, and Bong Joon-ho's work, in particular, so I'm really looking forward to watching this movie.

  Commentary:  I decided to add this movie to my collection after listening to an interview with Martin Scorsese in which he said this movie was part of his inspiration as he was working on The Age of Innocence. I'll collect and publish the exact quote, later. This movie, though, has been on my informal list (meaning, not this list, which is of movies I've seen but don't own) of movies I've been wanting to acquire for a couple of years, now. Right now, I'm going to watch the movie, the original Italian version (Il gattopardo) first, then the truncated (by 24 minutes) English version after.
    Roger Ebert, aside from christening this movie one of his "Great Movies" in 2003 (I couldn't find Ebert's original review ... but, Ebert didn't begin his career as a film critic until 1967, so his "Great Movie" review of this 1963 movie might be the only review of it he wrote), also interviewed a variety of people involved in making this movie, so it is mentioned in a variety of his articles. I'll scout those out and link them in this post, as well as add my reactions to watching both versions of this movie, later.

  Commentary:  As with the previous Christmas movie, I just received this today and haven't watched it. But I'll be watching it either tomorrow or Friday of this week. I'll post more then.
    By the way, Nell Minow contributed a very interesting and laudatory piece about Stanwyck's involvement in movies, including a bit about her life. If Barbara Stanwyck strikes you, at all, read it.
  Update 5/15/2022:  It's almost six months since I received and posted this movie and I still haven't watched it. I'm between Christmas seasons by almost exactly half, and likely won't watch this until the next season, six months from now. Although I live in a place where the summers are temperate and, during the monsoon, you can almost make yourself believe winter is coming, still, this place also produces a decent winter, including, most years, snow, so, I think I'll wait for another six months to watch this. Maybe over the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend. Remind me, please.

  Commentary:  This is one of two Christmas movies I ordered, both featuring Barbara Stanwyck, both filmed in the 1940's (this one in 1940, the other in 1945). My route to obtaining both of these Christmas movies didn't start even close to my destination. Last week I noticed, upon receiving Die Hard, that my Christmas collection of movies is paltry. This didn't surprise me. I'm not a fan of just any old Christmas or Holiday movie. As you can see, if you check out the list attached to the "Christmas" label, back there, I've even gotten rid of two Christmas movies since my mother's death (both of which she loved) that I just couldn't stand. I'm very discerning when it comes to holiday movies, so much so that if the cover of the case even looks like a TV Christmas production, I shake my head and turn away.
    But, I wanted to enrich my Christmas collection, this year. For some reason, which I doubt I'll plumb, I'm in the mood for Christmas movies this year. This isn't the first time it's happened, but it is pretty rare. So, I went on a hunt for a couple more, having had such luck with Die Hard. The search was increasingly dismal. I almost gave up. Then, I stumbled across these two Barbara Stanwyck movies [the other is Christmas in Connecticut]. I looked up information on them and thought, yeah! That's what I'm looking for! So I ordered both. Now, I'm looking forward to a Christmas movie session this year, and it'll start tomorrow night.
    The Christmas movies I've collected (and kept), though, are dear to my heart. I can't imagine going through "the season" without watching all of them every year between a bit before Christmas up to New Years. I even like every single one of them enough so that it's not unusual to watch any one of them throughout the year during the "off-holiday season" (which is, of course, the entire rest of the year excepting the Christmas season). And, by the way, don't even mention Thanksgiving movies. Not having any, thank you.

  Commentary:  Roger Ebert didn't like this movie very much. He only gave it two stars and a middling review. Other reviewers were equally ambivalent. They, at the time and through time, were in the minority, although a rather large minority. Audiences, however, were not ambivalent. It's a crowd pleaser, a perennial favorite and, dare I say, one of my favorite Christmas movies.
    Despite Roger Ebert's dismissal of it, it's been re-reviewed and revisited twice since the movie was released: Once in 2013 by Matt Zoller Seitz and again in 2015 by Brain Tallerico when a commemoriative set of the entire series of movies was released.
    Truth be told, the only movie in the series I've seen is this one. In fact, until I read one of the articles above, I was only vaguely aware that there was a collection surrounding this character. I can't imagine that I'll be catching up on the sequels, but, this year, for some reason, I wanted this movie to be a part of my Christmas celebration, and the Christmas part of my movie collection.

  Commentary:  If you want to watch a film about the mob, this is the film you want to see. This film isn't, like the Godfather trilogy, deadly but beautiful and somewhat sympathetic. This film is gritty, grim and deadly. There is no sympathy for the organization it portrays, nor the actors and their motivations within the organization. There is no beauty in this dump of corruption. At times, it's like watching a documentary shot undercover. This is probably due to the fact that it is based on a non-fiction book of the same name written by Roberto Saviano.
    If you want a romantic portrayal of crime syndicates that, despite it's savagery, manages to put on gorgeous weddings and muster a certain ethical construct that is almost understandable to "just regular people", watch the Godfather Trilogy. This movie is not that trilogy.
    Although this movie garnered much acclaim, not everyone appreciated it. Dan Schneider of Critical Movie Critics had several bones to pick with the movie and, frankly, he's not wrong. In fact, what disturbed me about the movie is that, typically, even documentaries attempt to entertain, if only to keep eyes on the screen. This movie, whether objectively considered a documentary, docudrama or the term Dan Schneider attaches to it, cinema verité, allows the viewer, me, that is, no place to seek a little sultry refuge for awhile. It's bare bones dread and death. Many times for no discernable reason. And that's it. Which fascinates me. So, I'll watch it, again. I'm glad I have it in my collection. To my (paltry) knowledge of film, it's one of a kind. What does that admission say about me?
    This movie has a list of Actors/Characters as long as my two arms. The following table contains only the first twelve, even though, in some movie tables, I've gone as far as listing twenty. So many of the characters in this movie die, though, after a few minutes on screen ...

  Commentary:  Third Dirty Harry film. Under construction.
    By the way, I may as well include these here, since I have plenty of space. Roger Ebert conducted three notable interviews, at least, that I know of: Here are the first, the second and the third. He may well have interviewed Clint more than these. If you're interested in Clint Eastwood, (and, I wonder, who isn't, I mean, the man, who was born in 1930, produced, directed and starred in a movie which has yet to be released but on which production has concluded, in his 91st year on the planet) you'll find the interviews fun and quirky, I think.
    This movie came as a Double Feature with The Gauntlet.
    This movie is filed alphabetically on my shelves as "Clint Eastwood".

  Commentary:  I confess that I have not yet seen this movie. When I picked it up at Costco I was delighted I was finally able to purchase it, remembering my pleasure in the 1994 (and original) version of this story.
    I haven't yet watched this movie. Suffice it to say, I expected to watch it the day I purchased it. Then, I looked up the Wikipedia article about this version and completely confused myself with the stridently divided critiques of it. While praising the voice acting, critics simultaneously called the movie various versions of "soulless". How is it possible for excellent voice acting to render a "soulless" movie, I wonder? Maybe some critics had a problem with the cgi-animation. Frankly, I love cgi-animation, so, we'll see. Soon.
    Maybe today.
